Profile: DJ KoFlow
Wayne Liu a.k.a DJ KoFlow, who first took to the decks in 2001, has quickly risen to become one of South East Asia’s premiere talents.
In 2002 DJ KoFlow was awarded the 1st Runner Up position at the DMC Technics World DJ Championships. The following year he went on to win the coveted title of 2003 DMC Singapore Champion. This title gave him the opportunity to battle at the infamous Brixton Academy, London, alongside over 40 of the World’s Champions.
Returning to Singapore DJ KoFlow quickly established himself as one of the influential forces in DJing and Turntablism. His uniquely versatile and dynamic performance style set him apart in the local scene.
His aggressive technical and creative style caught the attention of industrial leaders and gained him endorsements and public recognition through major events and public appearances. Playing opening acts for international artists such as Missy Elliot, Jazzy Jeff, Roonie G., DJ ShortKut, DJ Jred, The Herbaliser, Dynamo Production, The Black Eyed Peas and MC Jin.
DJ KoFlow maintained his hard work and dedication to DJing and continued to win numerous awards. He was given the “honorable mention” for Juice Magazine Best New DJ 2003, named Best Musician at the Nike StreetStyle Awards in 2004, Honorable Mention for Juice Magazine Best Independent DJ 2004 and won the Heineken Thirst Singapore 2005.
He was also featured in numerous festivals such as, MTV Pattaya Music Festival, Pop Village, Liberation, Get the Funk Out, Floorskillz, and also our national street parade, Chingay.
On his nights called Ghetto Blasta, at the now defunct club-Liquid Room, is now deemed legendary, as he never failed to rock the crowd week after week. Recognized for his distinctive technicality, local radio station 98.7FM invited DJ KoFlow to do a 15-week, one-hour show on the prime time slot for the Moto Music show.
Cutting across to other genres, DJ KoFlow also collaborated with world-renowned classical pianist, Maksim for a gig on MTV Asia. Later, he was also featured in a short film advertisement for Club 21, by award winning director, Royston Tan, together with other local actors. MTV Asia’s Urban Beats also commissioned him for a 15 Episode Feature ‘Turntable Trickery by DJ KoFlow’.
Recently, KoFlow was also featured on Channel U for the Renci charity show 2007. It showed him producing and Scratching his own track.
As the years have gone by, DJ KoFlow has built a branding that is in a league of it’s own in Singapore and in the Asia region. This “party rocker” is constantly in high demand in South East Asia. He has been invited to play at several prestigious clubs and events in countries that include Myanmar, Taiwan, Hong Kong, USA (San Francisco), Australia, Malaysia (Kuala Lumpur), UK (London), Indonesia and Thailand (Bangkok). While DJ KoFlow consistently continues to contribute to the local scene, he still considers himself as a student of Beat making…
“Technically, DJ KoFlow and his guys were brilliant. I, along with the three other judges, were scoring them top marks in virtually every category.”
